Senior Software Engineer - Rust

Bitwarden promotes better internet security and safety with the leading open source password management solution for individuals, teams, and business organizations. Our philosophy on security is that “we are all in this together” – we continue to offer a full-featured free version of Bitwarden so that everyone can be protected with strong password management.

We also provide enterprise-grade solutions to some of the largest companies in the world, and will continue to innovate in the identity and authentication market as the world starts to grow beyond passwords. Read more on the Bitwarden blog.

As a Senior Rust Engineer in Privileged Access Managed team, you will own building applications and maintaining Rust SDKs used across multiple product lines. This role is primarily for someone strong in Rust, FFI and language bindings, and native OS-level integration on Windows, macOS, and Linux, with the unusual challenge of delivering secure, reliable native experiences on top of a zero-knowledge, end-to-end encrypted product. This is not primarily a front-end or UI role.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

• Participate in the hands-on design, development, and evolution of the shared Rust SDK, including language bindings and FFI, consumed across desktop and browser clients
• Interface directly with OS-level APIs on Windows, macOS, and Linux to deliver reliable native behavior.
• Improve performance, reliability, security, and maintainability of native integrations handling sensitive credential data.
• Partner with product, design, QA, and the Autofill team to deliver high-quality experiences end to end.
• Review pull requests and help raise the quality of native/systems engineering, including community contributions in GitHub.
• Identify technical debt and contribute to pragmatic refactoring and architecture improvements
• Participate in code reviews, learning, and spreading technical knowledge
• Independently plan, estimate, and deliver new feature work and bug fixes
• Occasionally review & approve bug fixes submitted by the user community

WHAT YOU BRING TO BITWARDEN

• Strong production Rust experience — 4-6+ years overall backend/systems experience, including FFI and language bindings
• Native desktop application experience, interfacing directly with OS-level APIs on Windows, macOS, or Linux
• Experience designing and versioning cross-platform SDKs or shared libraries consumed by multiple client surfaces
• Experience using AI tooling in your development and testing workflow (Anthropic Claude preferred)
• Experience with Electron, TypeScript, and other web tech for cross-platform desktop applications and web clients is a plus
• Collaborative and adaptable mindset
• Openness and authenticity combined with excellent communication skills
• Excitement and enthusiasm for open source and for better internet security
• Excellent problem-solving skills – you might not know all the answers, but you know how to find and communicate the solution
