Registered Nurse RN Spine & Pain Program

Summary

The Registered Nurse provides direct care to patients using the nursing process. This includes ongoing assessment of the total patient. The RN provides interventions to treat the presenting symptoms and evaluates the effect of nursing interventions and patient's responses. The RN functions as a team leader/member and resource to others. The RN delegates, oversees and provides direction to support staff. Collaborates with interdisciplinary team to establish goals and outcomes for each patient.

The RN is responsible for meeting the needs of all types of patients.

Responsibilities

• (40%) Regularly assesses patient's needs and provides skilled nursing services as prescribed by the physician authorized plan of care and accepted standards of evidence based nursing practice. (30%) Provides direct patient care including medication administration, treatments, education, call lights, assisting with transfers, responding to alarms, and other duties as appropriate.
• (20%) Evaluates effectiveness of treatment plan and makes suggestions or participates in updating/revising the treatment plan in collaboration with other team members, utilizing current information to improve patient care.
• (10%) The RN is knowledgeable and compliant with all local, state and federal regulations and guidelines as well as hospital specific policies and procedures relating to care provided in the medical center.

Educate patient/family according to assessed learning needs considering readiness, ability, preferences, and cultural / spiritual variables. Demonstrates a general ability to manage assignments and perform routine duties on the unit. Instructs other team members when appropriate, explaining goals and rationale for individualized care. Documents in an accurate, clear, and concise way and includes pertinent clinical data. Shares information and reports significant changes and/or abnormal findings to appropriate team members in a timely manner. Participates in regulatory surveys. Participates in the performance improvement activities. Assists with orientation and ongoing competencies. Provides a safe and secure environment for patient care. Maintains knowledge with current trends and professional standards within a specialty. Demonstrates understanding of role in emergency preparedness procedures. Assemblies the patient's chart. Completes and documents patient's medical history. Delivers pre-operative and discharge instructions in the manner best suited for the patient and family. Ensures that current history and physical is on the chart, that the plan of care in the history and physical match surgical consent, and the surgical consent is signed by patient. Ensures completion and documentation of necessary lab work, x-rays, and cardiograms for surgical patients and communicates necessary results to the surgeon and anesthesiologist in a timely manner. Completes procedural checklist. Initiates physician orders and completes necessary tasks to ensure that patient is safely prepared for surgery. Participates in direct patient care. Performs other clinical and technical aspects of care in accordance with all established policies and procedures within the health system. Practices within the scope of practice as designated by the state of licensure. Delegates appropriate tasks and oversee completion of tasks by other members of the team. Assists anesthesiologist in performing nerve blocks by ensuring proper site marking, completion of safety check list, signing of consent, and maintaining sterile field. All other duties as assigned.
• REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING AND SKILLS: Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable manner. This position must show knowledge, ability, and competence in treating unit specific patient populations. Must follow MyMichigan Health blood borne pathogen and TB testing as required. • PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Regularly exposed to stressful situations; trauma, grief and death, public contact, decision making and a high level of concentration. Able to work with latex equipment or supplies. Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position. Is able to move freely about the unit and hospital. Overall vision is necessary; including reading, depth perception, close-up work and must have a peripheral field of vision. Hearing and speech on the phone as well as in person are necessary. Must be able to communicate verbally in person, on the phone and in writing. Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. Frequently exposed to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake Is frequently required to physically aide patients, including lifting. Must be able to lift minimum of 50 lbs. Overall dexterity is required, including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering, and feeling. Subject to on-call or irregular schedule.
