Senior Data Engineer - Data Platform

In 2018, Bitvavo launched the first version of its digital assets trading platform, to bridge the gap between traditional currencies and digital assets. By offering transparent fees, a wide range of assets and an easy to use platform, Bitvavo is making the currency of the future accessible for everyone.

In two years' time, Bitvavo has established itself as the market leader in the Netherlands and one of the largest in Europe, with over one million users exchanging tens of billions of digital assets a year.

About the Opportunity

We are looking for a talented Senior Data Platform Engineer to join the Data Platform team in our established Data domain. We are a central data team composed of Data Platform Engineers and Data Scientists, focused on building data products and self-service features.

We are an exchange. System scalability, performance and engineering productivity matter in everything that we do. The Data domain's mission is to make data a first-class product at Bitvavo, enabling every team to build, ship, and operate data and AI products with confidence. We're seeking exceptional talent to help us build a self-service data platform that makes this a reality.

What You’ll Be Doing

• Build and evolve a self-service Data Platform that enables teams to easily and reliably ship data pipelines, ML and AI products.
• Design scalable infrastructure for data ingestion, processing, and consumption, covering batch, real-time analytics, agents, dashboards and reporting.
• Empower the organization with AI-assisted tools and automation to accelerate development, reduce toil, and improve reliability across the stack.
• Own and maintain secure, compliant data infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code, with a strong bias toward automation over manual process.
• Continuously extend the platform to support emerging use cases in machine learning and generative AI, keeping pace with how teams want to use data.
• Mentor teammates by sharing technical knowledge, providing constructive feedback, and raising the bar on engineering excellence.

What We Look For

• Experience in tech companies or scale-ups, to deliver impact from Day 1
• Experience with one or more programming languages. We primarily use Python (Java is a plus), but we value problem-solving ability over syntax familiarity.
• Strong understanding of data engineering principles, including distributed data processing, stream processing, and data storage systems.
• Fluency in using infrastructure as code tools (like Terraform) and container orchestration platforms (like Kubernetes) in a cloud-first environment.
• Exceptional communication skills. We expect engineers to take ownership of their work end-to-end and proactively communicate with stakeholders.
• High sense of ownership and accountability. We value engineers who take initiative and advocate for the long-term health of our data ecosystem.
• Nice to Have
• Experience building or operating end-to-end ML platforms (feature stores, model training/serving, experiment tracking).
• Hands-on experience with stream processing frameworks such as Apache Flink.
• Experience with OLAP databases or analytical query engines (e.g. ClickHouse, Apache Trino) and open table formats (e.g. Apache Iceberg).
• At Bitvavo, we believe that diverse perspectives drive innovation, foster creativity, and lead to better outcomes. We are committed to building a team that reflects the diversity of the communities we serve and creating an inclusive environment where everyone can thrive. We welcome applicants of all backgrounds, identities, and experiences. Regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, age, religion, ability, or any other characteristic. Join us and be part of a team that values and celebrates your unique contributions.
• Bitvavo does not accept resumes from staffing, search, or recruitment firms without a signed agreement. If you send us a resume without such an agreement, we may contact the candidate directly without any obligation whatsoever and no fee of any kind will be paid should we hire the candidate.
