Are you a developer who wants to apply your skills to something bigger? As a Developer I, you’ll help build software solutions that use modern application development, AI, and automation to solve real-world challenges in pediatric healthcare and clinical research.
This role is ideal for a recent graduate with programming ability, good Linux skills, Docker familiarity, and basic API knowledge. You’ll contribute to the design, development, deployment, testing, and support of secure applications while collaborating with experienced engineers, researchers, informatics professionals, and healthcare teams. No prior professional experience is required; relevant skills may be demonstrated through coursework, projects, or internships.
You’ll have the opportunity to work with emerging technologies, including AI-assisted development, browser automation, computer vision, and OCR, while gaining experience in Linux systems, containerized deployments, and application support. It’s an opportunity to grow your technical expertise while building technology that supports meaningful work and helps improve the health of children.
Hybrid Requirements: This position requires approximately 50% on-site presence based on operational and support needs.
Job Responsibilities
Software Development and Workflow Automation
Develop, maintain, and support software components used in a healthcare research and innovation environment.
Assist in building modular software services, APIs, user interfaces, background workers, and integration components using technologies such as C#, .NET, Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, Blazor, or related frameworks.
Work with project leads to clarify requirements and translate assigned features into technical tasks, test cases, and maintainable code modules.
Contribute to AI-enabled tools and browser-based automation workflows that interact with approved clinical, research, administrative, or operational systems under human supervision and within institutional policy.
Support secure automation patterns that emphasize user review, traceability, exception handling, and appropriate escalation when workflows require human judgment.
Linux Systems Deployment and Application Support
Assist with configuring, maintaining, and troubleshooting Linux environments used for software development and application hosting.
Build and manage Docker containers and contribute to application deployments using tools such as Kamal.
Apply systems engineering fundamentals to application configuration, networking, service operation, and troubleshooting with guidance from experienced team members.
Support application monitoring, logging, updates, and troubleshooting to help maintain reliable software services.
Work directly with coworkers and end users to investigate software issues, communicate progress, and document solutions.
Computer Vision and Related Technologies
Contribute to projects involving computer vision, OCR, screenshot analysis, and screen-based validation as needed.
Work with experienced engineers to evaluate accuracy, identify failure cases, and support appropriate human review of automated outputs.
Testing Validation and Safe Development Practices
Help create mock environments, test harnesses, simulated workflows, synthetic data sets, and controlled development environments to support safe testing prior to production use.
Participate in unit testing, integration testing, regression testing, user acceptance testing, and validation of software components.
Assist with debugging, troubleshooting, performance review, quality assurance, and iterative improvement of applications.
Document validation steps, expected outputs, known limitations, and exception pathways.
Support controlled release processes, code review, version control, deployment documentation, and change tracking.
Collaboration and Requirements Development
Collaborate with clinical, research, operational, informatics, and technical stakeholders to understand workflows and identify opportunities for software improvements.
Participate in meetings with project leads, investigators, clinicians, coordinators, analysts, and software engineers to clarify requirements and implementation needs.
Communicate technical concepts clearly to non-technical coworkers and end users, and incorporate feedback into software design and refinement.
Demonstrate initiative and ownership of assigned work, communicate obstacles early, and follow through on commitments.
Develop leadership skills through sharing knowledge, contributing ideas, and helping the team solve problems.
Security Privacy Documentation and Compliance
Follow institutional policies and procedures related to privacy, security, HIPAA, human subjects research, clinical systems access, data governance, and responsible AI use.
Learn and apply cybersecurity fundamentals and secure data handling practices, including access control, credential management, appropriate logging, environment separation, and software updates.
Maintain clear documentation for code, workflows, configuration steps, validation procedures, deployment processes, and user support materials.
Use established software development practices, including Git/version control, issue tracking, code review, documentation, and reproducible build or deployment processes.
Escalate security, privacy, workflow, or patient safety concerns promptly to senior team members, investigators, project leads, or appropriate institutional stakeholders.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, biomedical engineering, data science, information systems, health informatics, or a related field.
Programming ability demonstrated through coursework, projects, internships, or employment.
Good working knowledge of Linux and command-line environments.
Familiarity with Docker and containerized application environments.
Basic understanding of APIs and application integration.
