Position Overview
As part of State Street's transformation journey, we are implementing a product and platform operating model to simplify how the firm operates, modernize platforms and processes, accelerate adoption of technology and AI, strengthen resiliency and controls, and improve outcomes for clients, employees and shareholders. Transformation is business-led and enterprise-enabled, with the Transformation Management Office providing enterprise coordination, governance, methodology and value-realization oversight.
The Head of Impact Assurance is the senior leader accountable for ensuring transformation investments deliver measurable, validated and sustainable business outcomes. Reporting to the Head of the Transformation Management Office, the role owns the enterprise impact assurance framework, including baseline establishment, business-case challenge, benefits validation, outcome measurement and intervention when expected value is at risk.
Working closely with Finance, Business Units, Technology, Risk, Human Resources and Transformation leaders, the role serves as the independent authority on transformation value realization and advises senior governance bodies on portfolio value, investment trade-offs and corrective actions. This is a highly visible leadership position requiring analytical rigor, executive presence, sound commercial judgment and the ability to challenge assumptions constructively, leading a compact impact-assurance team.
Primary Responsibilities
Enterprise Impact Assurance Framework & Standards – jointly with Finance
Own and define the enterprise framework for transformation impact measurement, validation, tracking and reporting.
Establish common definitions, methodologies and standards across financial, client, operational, productivity, adoption and risk outcomes.
Define consistent approaches for baselines, target setting, attribution and independent benefits validation.
Govern impact-assurance methodologies, tools and playbooks, ensuring measures are comparable, transparent and applied consistently.
Business Case Challenge & Investment Decision Enablement
Lead independent review and challenge of business cases, assumptions, projected benefits, costs, dependencies and timing.
Adjudicate double-counting, overlapping claims and benefit-attribution disputes.
Partner with Finance and senior leaders to strengthen the quality and transparency of investment decisions.
Advise governance bodies on prioritization, sequencing and reallocation of investment, weighing value, cost, risk, capacity and readiness.
Benefits Realization & Outcome Validation
- Convert transformation commitments into measurable targets with accountable owners and agreed validation methods.
- Track value from initial commitment through implementation and steady-state realization.
- Validate financial and non-financial outcomes against approved baselines, targets and evidence.
- Identify value leakage, implementation gaps and adoption shortfalls, maintaining a transparent view of realized, forecast and at-risk benefits.
- Executive Governance & Decision Support
- Provide independent assessments of transformation impact to executive leadership, steering committees and governance forums.
- Deliver concise, decision-oriented materials on value realization, risks, forecasts and required interventions.
- Lead impact-assurance input into Quarterly Business Reviews and portfolio reviews.
- Enable leadership to redirect investment, capacity and attention based on validated outcomes.
- Corrective Intervention & Portfolio Partnership
- Identify initiatives underperforming against approved outcomes or where benefit confidence has deteriorated.
- Partner with Transformation Directors, Program Leads, business owners and Finance to determine root causes of impact gaps.
- Recommend corrective actions, revised targets or investment adjustments where warranted.
- Monitor remediation and escalate unresolved value risks, maintaining independence while building constructive partnerships.
- Analytics, Talent & Capability Leadership
- Build enterprise capability in value management, productivity analytics, forecasting and benefits realization.
- Use data, automation and AI-enabled analytics to improve the timeliness, quality and predictive value of insights.
- Lead and develop assurance, analytics and value-management resources, with clear standards and strong succession.
- Partner with Governance and Reporting to integrate validated outcomes into enterprise reporting.
- Experience, Skills & Leadership Capabilities
- Substantial leadership experience in value realization, transformation assurance, performance management, portfolio governance, strategy execution, finance transformation or consulting within financial services or another highly regulated industry.
- Proven success owning enterprise frameworks, standards and governance across complex transformation portfolios.
- Deep expertise in business-case challenge, benefits realization, financial analysis, productivity measurement and portfolio decision support.
- Experience evaluating initiatives involving operating-model change, process redesign, technology modernization, automation and AI-enabled capabilities.
- Ability to advise senior executives and governance forums on investment trade-offs, value risk and corrective interventions, translating complex evidence into clear recommendations.
- Strong understanding of Finance planning, budgeting, forecasting and performance management, with the ability to work across Business, Technology and Risk organizations.
- Objective, independent mindset with the courage to challenge assumptions and communicate difficult findings while maintaining trusted relationships.
- Player-coach leadership style, developing professionals and leading through influence across organizational boundaries.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required; advanced degree in finance, economics, business, analytics or a related discipline preferred.
- Success Measures
- Success in this role will be measured through: Adoption and credibility of enterprise impact-assurance standards.
- Accuracy, consistency and transparency of baselines, benefit forecasts and realized-value reporting.
- Quality of business-case challenge and executive investment decision support.
- Realization of validated financial and non-financial benefits, with reduced value leakage, double-counting and benefit inflation.
- Timely resolution of impact shortfalls and completion of corrective actions.
- Executive and governance confidence in outcome reporting and return-on-investment transparency.
