Employer Job Description
From Ranchflow's posting. “We” and “our” refer to the employer.
Location: San Antonio, Texas (on-site)
About Ranchflow
Ranchflow builds AI-powered livestock monitoring and virtual fencing for ranchers. Solar-powered GPS smart collars track location, monitor animal health, and use audio cues to keep cattle within virtual boundaries drawn in the Ranchflow app. There are no posts, wires, or fence maintenance. Alongside the collars, the Ranchflow Ranch Management Platform gives producers one place for records, grazing plans, and day-to-day operations.
Founded by ranchers and technologists, Ranchflow turns years of field observation into AI insights that help producers catch illness early, run rotational grazing easily, and raise healthier herds. Ranchflow is headquartered in San Antonio, Texas with offices in Canada. Learn more at www.ranchflow.ai.
Ranchflow is part of the Soilworks Natural Capital portfolio.
The Role
We’re looking for a hands-on Software Engineer to take ownership of our software platform: our mobile and web applications, backend services, and cloud infrastructure. You’ll work closely with our founder and our hardware and firmware teams to turn product requirements into reliable, easy-to-use features, and help take the product from prototype through commercial deployment.
This is an AI-first seat: we expect you to use LLMs every day and to build lightweight tools and workflows that let a small team produce the output of a much larger one
What you’ll do
- Build and improve Ranchflow’s mobile app, web dashboard, backend services, and APIs.
- Build features for livestock tracking, virtual fence management, paddock planning, grazing history, alerts, and device management.
- Design reliable data flows between collars, gateways, cloud services, and user applications.
- Work with the firmware team to define device communication interfaces, boundary updates, acknowledgements, and synchronization when connectivity is intermittent.
- Develop map-based tools for drawing and editing paddocks, viewing animal locations, and reviewing historical activity.
- Improve onboarding, farm setup, collar pairing, and the overall farmer experience.
- Own database design, cloud deployment, monitoring, security, and platform performance.
- Establish practical standards for code reviews, automated testing, documentation, and release management.
- Break product requirements into technical tasks and help coordinate delivery as the team grows.
Requirements
What you’ll bring
- Two or more years of professional software development experience delivering production software used by real customers.
- Strong full-stack skills, including backend services, APIs, databases, and modern web or mobile applications.
- Experience taking ownership of software architecture decisions.
- Experience deploying and operating applications on a major cloud platform.
- A strong understanding of authentication, access control, data security, and reliable system design.
- Experience with automated testing, CI/CD, Git, and collaborative code reviews.
- The ability to troubleshoot problems across applications, backend services, and connected systems.
- Strong communication skills and comfort working in a small team where priorities evolve through field testing and customer feedback.
- Nice to have
- Experience with IoT platforms, connected devices, or hardware-integrated products.
- Experience with mapping, geospatial databases, GPS data, or location-based applications.
- Experience with offline functionality, intermittent connectivity, and data synchronization.
- Familiarity with device messaging protocols such as MQTT.
- Experience with mobile app releases, device onboarding, Bluetooth, or NFC.
- Exposure to agriculture, livestock management, or other field-deployed technology.
Benefits
- Premier Health Insurance plan with $0 deductible and $0 co-pay
- Dental and vision insurance plans
- Flexible spending account options
- Open Paid Time Off Policy plus nine paid public holidays
- Participation in our 401(k) savings plan
- Company-paid Life and AD&D coverage
- Educational materials and expenses to support related development
