Position Overview
This role will responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining moderately complex software applications and systems. This position will contribute to technical planning, collaborate with cross-functional teams and support continuous improvement efforts across the engineering team. This role will also participate in code reviews, contribute to architectural discussions, and help drive adherence to best practices and development standards.
Senior Software Engineer – Expert Claim Review
Position Summary
Zelis is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join the ECR (Expert Claims Review) engineering team. This role will help design, develop, modernize, and support business-critical applications and services used in the claims editing and payment integrity ecosystem.
The ideal candidate is a hands-on senior engineer who is comfortable working across an established enterprise application stack while helping move capabilities toward modern, cloud-based architectures. This individual will take ownership of complex technical problems, deliver high-quality production software, troubleshoot issues across application and data layers, and collaborate closely with Product, QA, Architecture, DevOps, and other engineering teams.
This is an individual contributor role with an expectation of strong technical leadership, independent problem solving, and mentorship of other engineers.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, test, deploy, and support scalable, reliable software supporting ECR and related claims-editing workflows.
- Own complex features and technical initiatives from requirements and design through production deployment and ongoing support.
- Develop and maintain backend services, APIs, database integrations, and application components within the ECR ecosystem.
- Contribute to the modernization of ECR applications and services, including migration of appropriate workloads and capabilities to AWS and cloud-native architectures.
- Work effectively across both existing/legacy application components and newer services as the platform evolves.
- Analyze and optimize application and database performance, including SQL queries, stored procedures, and data-intensive processing.
- Troubleshoot complex production issues, perform root-cause analysis, and implement sustainable solutions rather than short-term fixes.
- Participate in code reviews and promote engineering practices that improve maintainability, reliability, security, observability, and testability.
- Build appropriate automated unit and integration tests and partner closely with QA engineers on overall product quality.
- Collaborate with Product Owners and business stakeholders to understand requirements and translate them into sound technical solutions.
- Partner with Architecture, Cloud/DevOps, Security, Data, and other engineering teams on cross-functional initiatives and integrations.
- Participate in release planning, deployment activities, production support, and incident response for ECR applications.
- Improve engineering documentation, development workflows, deployment processes, and operational runbooks.
- Mentor engineers and provide technical guidance while helping raise engineering standards across the team.
- Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, with demonstrated ownership of production enterprise applications.
- Strong experience with C# and .NET/.NET Core application development.
- Strong understanding of object-oriented design, software design patterns, APIs, distributed applications, and service-oriented architectures.
- Strong experience with Microsoft SQL Server, including SQL development, stored procedures, query optimization, and troubleshooting.
- Experience designing and consuming REST APIs and integrating applications with internal and external services.
- Experience developing and supporting applications running in production environments with meaningful availability, performance, and data-integrity requirements.
- Experience with automated testing, source control, code review, CI/CD, and modern software development practices.
- Strong debugging and problem-solving skills with the ability to investigate issues across application, database, infrastructure, and integration boundaries.
- Ability to work independently on ambiguous or complex technical problems while collaborating effectively with a cross-functional Agile team.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Hands-on experience with AWS, particularly building or modernizing enterprise applications using AWS services.
- Experience with serverless or event-driven architectures, including technologies such as AWS Lambda.
- Experience modernizing legacy .NET applications into more modular, service-oriented, or cloud-native architectures.
- Experience with application observability, logging, monitoring, and production troubleshooting.
- Experience with healthcare technology, claims processing, claims editing, payment integrity, or healthcare data.
- Experience working with high-volume transactional or data-processing systems.
- Familiarity with secure development practices and applications handling sensitive healthcare information.
- Experience mentoring engineers and providing technical leadership without requiring formal people-management responsibility.
What Success Looks Like
Within the first several months, the Senior Software Engineer will develop a strong understanding of the ECR platform and its claims-processing workflows, independently deliver meaningful product enhancements, and become a trusted technical contributor for production troubleshooting and solution design.
Over time, this engineer will help reduce technical debt, improve the reliability and maintainability of the ECR platform, strengthen engineering practices across the team, and play an important role in modernizing ECR capabilities and moving appropriate workloads toward Zelis' target cloud architecture.
Ideal Candidate
The strongest candidate will combine deep hands-on engineering skills with ownership and technical judgment. We are looking for someone who can move comfortably between diagnosing a difficult SQL or production issue, designing a new service or API, reviewing another engineer's implementation, and helping determine how an existing ECR capability should evolve as the platform is modernized.
Experience in healthcare claims is valuable, but the ability to quickly understand a complex business domain, take ownership of critical systems, and consistently deliver well-engineered solutions is equally important.
