Precision Steel Services — Toledo, OH
Precision Steel Services has supplied steel across the Midwest since 1974. We are looking for an experienced Manual Machinist to join our machining team.
This is not a button-pushing job.
As a Manual Machinist, you will set up and operate manual machining equipment to produce steel components that meet dimensional, tolerance, finish, and customer requirements. The role may include horizontal and vertical boring mills, surface grinders, duplex mills, drilling, tapping, and related manual machining operations.
You control the finished result through setup, tooling selection, measurement, machine awareness, and craftsmanship.
Good machinists make parts to print. Great machinists produce work they are proud to stand behind.
What You’ll Do
- Set up and operate horizontal and/or vertical boring mills
- Perform manual machining operations to produce steel components to specification
- Perform drilling and tapping while maintaining thread quality, alignment, location, and depth
- Operate surface grinders and duplex mills as assigned
- Review prints, work orders, job travelers, and machining requirements before beginning work
- Verify material condition, dimensions, stock allowance, and setup requirements
- Position and secure material using fixtures, jigs, clamps, blocks, and other setup equipment
- Select and install the appropriate cutters, inserts, drills, taps, collets, fixtures, and tooling
- Determine and adjust speeds, feeds, depths of cut, and other machining parameters
- Monitor machine sound, feel, finish, tooling condition, and part condition throughout the job
- Replace worn or damaged inserts, drills, taps, and tooling before they create quality problems
- Use precision measuring tools such as calipers, micrometers, indicators, height gauges, depth gauges, and precision squares
- Check dimensions, squareness, flatness, parallelism, surface finish, and other requirements
- Run multiple machines or processes while maintaining quality, safety, and pace
- Deburr, clean, and inspect completed parts before releasing them to the next operation
- Record production, inspection, downtime, and required job information accurately
- Use overhead cranes, forklifts, and other material-handling equipment as trained
- Perform routine machine cleaning, lubrication, coolant checks, and preventative maintenance
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area
What We Expect
- You verify the print, material, setup, tooling, and stock allowance before machining begins
- You understand that small measurement or setup errors can create expensive scrap
- You pay attention to machine sound, feel, finish, and performance
- You recognize worn or damaged tooling and replace it before quality suffers
- You stop and ask questions when something does not look, sound, or measure correctly
- You do not pass questionable work to the next operation
- You work with urgency without sacrificing quality or safety
- You take ownership of your machine, tooling, documentation, and finished work
- You keep your machine and work area ready for the next job or shift
- You show up reliably and understand that attendance matters
- You produce parts you would be comfortable putting your name on
What Winning Looks Like
- Parts are machined accurately and move forward without questions or rework
- Setups are safe, clean, efficient, and repeatable
- Stock is removed correctly without taking parts undersize
- Dimensions, squareness, tolerances, and finish requirements are consistently achieved
- Tooling is monitored and changed before it causes poor quality or downtime
- Problems are caught early instead of becoming scrap
- Production goals are met without sacrificing quality or safety
- Machines are clean, maintained, and ready for the next job
- The next shift receives a clear, organized handoff
- The finished work reflects pride, craftsmanship, and control
- Why Precision Steel
