Job Description
About the Team
Compute & Connectivity Hardware (CCH) is part of GM’s Vehicle Software & Electronics Engineering (VSEE) organization within Software & Services Engineering. The team develops the physical hardware foundation for GM’s software-defined vehicles, including compute, connectivity, networking, displays, and other electronic platforms that enable in-vehicle software, infotainment, ADAS, vehicle controls, and connected experiences.
CCH’s work spans architecture, requirements, hardware and electronics design, embedded hardware, systems integration, validation, launch, and in-market performance. Our engineers collaborate across software, systems, controls, cybersecurity, functional safety, vehicle engineering, suppliers, and manufacturing to develop reliable, production-ready hardware for GM’s vehicle portfolio.
The Role
At General Motors, we're redefining the vehicle through centralized computing, advanced electrical architectures, and software-defined capabilities. Our Software-Defined Vehicle (SDV) platform powers next-generation features including automated driving, connected services, and immersive digital experiences. At the center of this transformation is GM's in-house designed Central Compute Unit (CCU), a high-performance, liquid-cooled computing platform that serves as the foundation for future vehicle intelligence.
As a Senior Hardware Validation Engineer - Compute Validation, you will be responsible for validating and releasing next-generation compute hardware that powers GM's software-defined vehicles. You will lead validation activities for complex ECU platforms, owning test strategy, execution, issue resolution, and release readiness across environmental, EMC, and functional validation domains.
This role requires strong technical leadership, hands-on debugging expertise, and close collaboration with hardware, software, systems, manufacturing, and vehicle integration teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Compute Hardware Validation
- Lead validation planning and execution for central compute platforms throughout the product development lifecycle.
- Develop validation strategies, test plans, and coverage aligned with product requirements, technical risks, and program milestones.
- Define interface validation requirements, test methods, and acceptance criteria.
- Drive issue identification, root cause analysis, corrective actions, and closure of hardware validation concerns.
- Partner with design engineers to incorporate validation learnings into product improvements and future designs.
- Environmental & EMC Validation
- Own environmental validation activities including thermal, vibration, mechanical shock, humidity, and reliability testing.
- Lead EMC/EMI validation readiness, execution, issue triage, and corrective action tracking.
- Collaborate with internal and external laboratories to develop test setups, review results, and drive resolution of validation failures.
- Improve hardware robustness and compliance performance through data-driven validation insights.
- Hardware Bring-Up & Debug
- Lead board bring-up and validation of prototype and production-intent hardware.
- Perform hands-on lab testing including power measurements, signal integrity assessments, thermal characterization, and stress testing.
- Investigate and resolve issues involving power delivery, high-speed interfaces, environmental performance, and EMC behavior.
- Assess validation results and provide clear recommendations regarding product readiness and technical risk.
- Cross-Functional Leadership
- Collaborate with silicon vendors and cross-functional teams including hardware, software, systems, safety, manufacturing, and vehicle integration.
- Support technical reviews, validation reviews, and program milestone assessments.
- Provide technical leadership within validation workstreams and help drive alignment across engineering teams and external partners.
- Quality & Compliance
- Ensure validation activities support automotive reliability, EMC, manufacturability, and quality requirements.
- Support DVP&R, DFMEA, requirements traceability, and coverage analysis.
- Communicate validation results, risks, and recommendations to engineering and program leadership.
- Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field.
- 7+ years of experience in hardware validation, embedded electronics, ECU development, or compute platform engineering.
- Strong experience validating complex automotive electronic modules or compute systems.
- Experience leading environmental and/or EMC validation activities for automotive hardware.
- Knowledge of automotive hardware development processes, reliability engineering, and product release methodologies.
- Strong understanding of: Digital electronics and embedded hardware fundamentals Power distribution and system architecture High-speed interfaces including PCIe, Ethernet, USB, and DDR Hardware bring-up, debugging, and failure analysis Automotive environmental and EMC validation processes
- Hands-on experience with lab equipment including oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, power supplies, multimeters, and debug tools.
- Excellent troubleshooting, analytical, and communication skills.
- Proven ability to independently drive technical issues to resolution across cross-functional teams.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Central Compute, ADAS, Autonomous Driving, Infotainment, or other high-performance embedded computing platforms.
- Familiarity with DVP&R, DFMEA, requirements management, and traceability processes.
- Experience validating hardware utilizing high-speed interfaces such as PCIe, Ethernet, DDR, USB, and SerDes technologies.
- Experience supporting hardware development from prototype through production launch.
- Why Join GM?
- You'll help validate the computing platform that serves as the foundation for GM's software-defined vehicle future, enabling advanced driver assistance, connected experiences, over-the-air updates, and next-generation vehicle intelligence across our global portfolio. This is an opportunity to influence cutting-edge compute hardware at scale while working alongside some of the industry's leading hardware and software engineers.
